Your Complete Guide to Being Well and Staying Healthy
Health Tip of the Day

How to Protect Your Voice

  • Break the throat-clearing habit. Instead, swallow twice to help move mucus along.

  • Improve your air quality. Quit smoking and stay away from secondhand smoke and other sources of pollution.

  • Stay hydrated. Try taking small sips of water throughout the day to keep the mucus from building up.

  • Turn the volume down. If you're prone to temporary hoarseness, you may be talking too loudly.

  • Use a cool-mist humidifier to keep the air moist. A steamy shower also will give you warm, moist air to breathe.

  • Know when to visit the doctor. If hoarseness lasts more than two weeks, or you experience a complete loss of your voice for more than a few days, call your doctor.
